TRAIL GROOMING PARTNERSHIP

The Town of Mammoth Lakes partners with Inyo National Forest Mammoth and Mono Ranger Districts to Groom Over-Snow Vehicle Trails

The winter months are often a time when people become more sedentary, but the diversity, quantity, and quality of our free winter grooming program allow locals and visitors alike a safe way to get out and explore the winter wonderland that is Mammoth Lakes
— Lawson Reif, TOML Office of Outdoor Recreation Manager

Did you know you can explore over 90 miles of groomed winter trails from Mammoth Lakes?

Winter in Mammoth Lakes isn’t just about skiing the downhill slopes.  The Town of Mammoth Lakes (TOML) maintains an incredible system of 90+ miles of groomed multi-use trails for both motorized and non-motorized recreation. These scenic trails stretch from the base of the Sherwins, just south of town, all the way to June Lake Junction, offering endless opportunities for winter adventure.

The TOML Office of Outdoor Recreation is responsible for keeping these trails in top shape. The team uses a PistenBully snowcat to groom the motorized system and a snowmobile towing a Tid-Tech grooming implement for the non-motorized system. The motorized grooming program is primarily funded through the State Over-Snow-Vehicle Program, and the non-motorized grooming program is funded through the Town’s Measure R, ensuring smooth trails all season long.

To help maintain these trails, we ask all visitors to respect the rules:

  • No wheeled vehicles are allowed on groomed trails, with the exception of winter fat bikes (e-fat bikes only permitted on the motorized system).

  • Be courteous and share the trails with fellow users, whether you're skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, or biking.

We are really excited to expand the scope of our grooming program this year. The 90 mile network that we are grooming covers some amazing terrain and brings trail users to some special places in the Mammoth Lakes area. We are proud to be tasked with the maintenance of this unique recreation amenity.
— Andrew Mulford, TOML Trails Program Manager
